Would everyone stop just a minute as the cooler Fall air has hit the Centre Region and go and look at your furnace in the basement?
What do you see? Do you see a pipe that goes through the wall? What is on the other side of that pipe?
Let me tell you. You have a chimney that services your furnace. Some homeowners think that the chimney is only connected to their fireplace or wood stove but this is simply untrue. Your furnace – whether oil or gas – has to vent the products of combustion out of your home and most all furnaces use your chimney to do that. (only a newer high efficiency gas furnace uses a PVC line and bypasses the chimney).
The next thing a customer almost ALWAYS says is this: “But my furnace was just cleaned and the furnace technician takes care of the flue.”
Please believe me – and call the furnace company to confirm – FURNACE COMPANIES DO NOT TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHIMNEY FLUE!!!! Did they get on your roof with a brush? Then they did not sweep or inspect your chimney.
Let me show you some pictures of the past few weeks here at Top Hat. (See Bottom of Post) These pictures are of furnace flues where the homeowner thought the Furnace Company had taken care of the flue. These flues are deteriorated and some are falling in. The third picture down shows a flue with NO clay liner at all. These flues will continue to deteriorate and will eventually fall into the chimney – blocking the gasses that need to escape out of the home. They are dangerous and should not be used until repaired.
So, go check your basement. Go right now. Then tell your mom and dad to check theirs. And your neighbors and friends. Call Top Hat today to make sure your furnace chimney is safe and ready to use this season.
